How much does a non-compliant electrical panel cost? More than replacing it

The electrical panel is the box that no one opens. Until you smell hot plastic, until the protection trips three times a day, or until the inspector asks for the PRAM bulletins and the diagram. Then you find out that the panel is inconsistent and that its real price is not the one on the invoice from ten years ago.

If you want a check of the panels in your building, with report and thermography, see the page electrical distribution boards.

What does "non-compliant" mean?„

It's not a vague label. We almost always find some of these problems during inspections:

  • Without differential protection on the circuits that require it, or with just one, on the entire board, which triggers on anything.
  • Oversized protections: the fuse was "bigger" so it wouldn't blow anymore, and now the cable heats up before it does.
  • Mixed neutral and protective conductors, multi-wire terminals, connections without lugs.
  • No schema and no labels: no one knows what powers each circuit, and any intervention begins with shutting down the entire building.
  • ground missing or with resistance value above the allowed limit.
  • Signs of warming: blackened terminals, melted insulation, smell. Thermography sees them before they are visible to the naked eye.
  • Unauthorized modifications: new circuits drawn by "a boy who knows how to", without a report, without a report card.
  • Inappropriate degree of protection for the installation location (wet basement, outdoors, dusty hall).

What are you risking?

At the check-up

ITM and ISU inspectors ask for PRAM inspection reports and, in buildings with fire safety installations, the correspondence between what is installed and what is approved. A panel without documents is a point in the report, with a deadline for remediation. I wrote about what is checked in PRAM measurements and thermographic inspections.

In case of damage

A panel that does not have a schematic and separate circuits is serviced with the entire floor shut down. In a hotel, a clinic, or a production line hall, downtime has a price that you know better than we do.

At the fire

Electrical installations are among the common causes of fires in buildings. After a fire, the insurer asks for the same documents as the inspector: reports, minutes, authorization from the person who performed the work. Without them, the discussion about compensation becomes complicated.

What does the price of compliance depend on?

We don't give you a figure from the office, because it wouldn't be accurate. We tell you what it depends on, so you understand the offer when you receive it:

  • What is kept. Sometimes the casing and part of the equipment remain, the connections are restored, protections are added and labeling is done. Other times the entire panel is replaced.
  • Number of circuits and the type of protections (differentials on each circuit, overvoltage protections, separators).
  • Installed power and whether the painting is general or secondary.
  • Installation location: dry or medium interior requiring a high degree of protection.
  • Documentation: single-wire diagram, labeling, PRAM bulletins after the work, reception report.
  • program: if the work needs to be done at night or on weekends, so that the activity does not stop.

We calculate the cost on your case, after a visit in which we open the painting, take photos, measure and do thermography. The visit is usually enough to tell you on the spot whether we are talking about a repair or a replacement.

What do you get from an ANRE authorized company?

  • The work performed by ANRE certified electricians, with company certificate.
  • The diagram of the painting, glued to the door and delivered in electronic format.
  • Labels on each circuit.
  • PRAM verification bulletins for earthing, continuity and differential protections.
  • Reception report and, where applicable, updating the building file.
  • A calendar of PRAM checks periodic, so you don't end up here again.

A simple test you can do today

Open the panel door. If you can't find a schematic, if the circuits are unlabeled, or if you see any sign of discolored terminals, you have your answer. Take a picture and send it to us.

Send us pictures of the paintings and the address of the building, and we will schedule the inspection and give you the offer within 3-5 business days after the visit: request verification.

Do you have a new project or a building in operation?

Tell us what building you have and what is hurting you right now. You will receive an on-site technical assessment and offer within 3-5 business days.
